About this project
Company – Strostics Founder Professor Timothy RAINER Chairperson and Professor of Emergency Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong Company Profile Strostics will offer point of care blood tests for early, diagnostic and risk-assessment of stroke in the community. Company Overview v Small Medium Enterprise v MedTech | BioTech | Labs v Stroke Diagnostics, Prognostics and Therapeutics v To form as soon as possible Vision and Mission Our Vision v An SME dedicated to stroke biomarker development. v 10-in-10: In 10 years, we aim to help 10 million stroke patients get timely and optimal treatments. Our Mission We are on a mission v To prevent deaths or disability due to stroke. v To develop the world's first blood test for stroke assessment v To make the test accessible and affordable in community settings, ambulances, and hospitals worldwide v To target initial markets in China and Africa, where the need for stroke diagnosis is high Burden of Stroke and Unmet Clinical Need The Problem – Global burden of Stroke v 2nd leading cause of death and disability v 12.2M new cases per year v Every 40 seconds someone has a new stroke v US$45B Annual cost of stroke per year Time is Brain, Impact Matters: v Early Awareness, Better Treatment, Improved Recovery, More Efficient Use of Resources Our Solution – Rapid Diagnostic Test A Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) is a quick way of quickly establishing the diagnosis of stroke by detecting specific blood proteins in a person's blood. We aim to develop one RDT (Strostics ) for FDA approval in the United States, China and Africa for use in the community. After discovering novel diagnostic proteins in the blood, we propose to develop a visual aptamer-based lateral flow POCT. Technology v In vitro RDT kit for early stroke detection, diagnosis and prognosis v >95% accuracy, sensitivity and specificity v A visual lateral flow device delivering a result in 10 – 15 minutes v Three Provisional US patents filed v Two further Provisional US patents in preparation Technique A blood specimen collected from the patient is applied to the sample pad on the test card along with certain reagents. After 10-15 minutes, the presence of specific bands in the test card window indicates whether the patient is likely to have a stroke and/or the type of stroke. Advantages Accurate, stable, easy to use, portable, non-technical, cheap RDT. High-quality stroke tests are not immediately available in the community, ambulances or clinics where patients are undecided about seeking medical attention. In such settings, patients will use an RDT to rapidly determine if they are likely to have a stroke or other urgent brain condition. Disadvantages The use of the RDT does not necessarily eliminate the need for medical assessment. The RDT may not be able to detect some strokes especially during some time frames. The RDT may be insensitive to determine rule out some stroke mimics. All patients with positive RDTs should go to hospital immediately for assessment. All negative or indeterminate RDTs should be repeated within 30 minutes if symptoms persist. Our Need HK$15 000 000 (US$2 000 000) from early stage to commercialisation and listing on the stock market within 5 years.
