meteoNEX: AI Dynamical Hybrid Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction and Services
About this project
The meteoNEX project combines artificial intelligence with a self-developed global climate dynamical model, focusing on meteorological forecasting services for the "sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S)" time scale. With its refined forecasting capabilities, the project provides decision-making support for governments, enhancing their ability to respond efficiently to extreme weather events and optimize resource allocation. At the same time, it assists weather-sensitive businesses in making informed decisions, optimizing strategic planning, and resource management. The project can be applied to key sectors such as financial meteorology, urban resilience, agriculture, renewable energy, the low-altitude economy, and shipping, among others.
The project's competitive edge lies in its combination of artificial intelligence with the most advanced global climate dynamical models, specifically targeting the S2S golden window of opportunities. It addresses the market gap in forecast accuracy for this time scale. The team is led by Professor Lu Mengqian from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and includes experts and advisors from various fields such as technology, energy, and finance. The project has already received multiple international recognitions, including two consecutive gold awards at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition in 2024 and 2025, and a gold award at the 2023 Asia International Innovation Invention Exhibition (Hong Kong).
It is worth noting that Professor Lu also leads the global interdisciplinary initiative – The Seamless Prediction and Services for Sustainable Natural and Built Environments (SEPRESS), which has been officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, with the meteoNEX project being the first technology transfer of this initiative.
