Green and Smart Transportation Opportunities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – Presentation by Saudi Public Transport Company The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) joined the United Nations Framework Conven9on on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1994, and in 2016 ratified the Paris Climate Agreement. In 2021 His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, the Head of the Higher CommiQee for the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), launched the first set of SGI environmental initiatives with the first wave of initiatives aiming to achieve more than 278 Mtpa carbon emissions reduction and 50% of its power generated from renewable sources by 2030. KSA’s Vision 2030 in 2016, announces substan9al investments on green initiatives including green transportation as well as several economic and tourism related Giga Projects all of which rely on the provision of comprehensive public transportation networks. Established in 1979, SAPTCO is the largest public transportation operator in KSA. The Company is a joint stock company with the KSA Government as a major shareholder and with four Board Members appointed by the His Royal Highness King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
