Biomethanol - Decarbonization of Industry

BioMethanol Project Proposal - Currently, most liquid fuels and chemicals come from fossil sources such as oil and natural gas. Driven by the decarbonisation ovement, this proposal aims to enable a technological route that uses biogas as a raw material for the production of biomethanol. The objective of this proposal is to contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact and emissions of the economy of Paraná. Biogas is seen as a renewable alternative to natural gas, as both are essentially composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). From these components it is possible, through the process of catalytic reforming, to produce synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), with which it is possible to synthesize a large diversity of products, such as hydrocarbons, hydrogen and methanol. The proposal focuses on the production of methanol, as it is a strategic product for the production of biodiesel and all the methanol consumed in Brazil has been imported, corresponding to around 1.2 million tons per year. The project aims to provide the implementation of an innovative pilot plant, the first in Brazil, based on biogas reforming and subsequent catalytic conversion of the generated synthesis gas into biomethanol. The project seeks to technically develop a process that values biogas, transforming it into an asset with high energy density that can be commercially used in other production chains.
