On 29 March 2016, China and the Czech Republic issued a joint statement on the establishment of a strategic partnership. As well as agreeing to establish such a partnership, the two sides also made clear their commitment to further advance bilateral co-operation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as initially proposed by the Chinese side. In line with this, the two parties have pledged to deepen mutually beneficial co-operation with regard to peace, sustainable development and common prosperity. This was confirmed in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the two governments with a particular focus on boosting bilateral ties as part of the BRI. The two sides also announced plans to sign a second MOU with regard to the joint preparation of a China-Czech co-operation plan. Following the signing of this second document, work on the designated projects will proceed with all speed.
