Memorandum of Understanding Between China and Greece with Regard to Jointly Advancing the Belt and Road Initiative

Memorandum of Understanding Between China and Greece with Regard to Jointly Advancing the Belt and Road Initiative
27 Aug 2018

During his 27 August visit to Beijing, Nikos Kotzias, the Greek Foreign Minister, held discussions with Wang Yi, his Chinese counterpart, prior to the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Regard to Inter-Governmental Cooperation in the Joint Construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. This marked a joint commitment to the accelerated implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as an undertaking to increase the level of cooperation between the two countries on an on-going basis.

For both parties, the formal adoption of the Memorandum of Understanding is a catalyst for integrating the objectives of the Belt and Road Initiative with Greece’s own redevelopment programme, which aims to enhance the country’s regional transportation network, establish a series of energy and service hubs and boost facilities connectivity on a national basis. Ultimately, it is hoped that this programme will facilitate greater freedom of trade and optimise the country’s level of global financial integration, while, in more concrete terms, expediting the joint development of the Port of Piraeus and the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line. For its part, China pledged to up its quality imports from Greece in order to establish a more balanced level of bilateral trade. As a concluding note, the two parties agreed to prioritise strengthening the bonds between their two peoples and to adopt a wider programme of cultural exchanges.
