29 Jun 2017

The General Administration of Sport has announced an action plan designed to implement both the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guiding Opinions of the China National Tourism Administration and the General Administration of Sport on Vigorously Developing Sports Tourism. This is intended to accelerate the collaborative development of sports and tourism within China and along the route of the Belt and Road, while also promoting in-depth co-operation with regard to sports tourism with those same countries. Overall, it aims to foster the sports tourism market, while building tourism brands in three years through the development of a number of premium sports tourism events, sports and leisure projects with particular characteristics, sports tourism enterprises with a competitive edge and famous sports tourism destinations. Ultimately, it is hoped that the number of sports-related tourists will account for more than 15% of the total number of leisure visitors to such destinations by 2020. The action plan also extends across a number of other issues, including publicity for sports tourism, the nurturing of key sports tourism projects, the construction of sports tourism facilities, the manufacture of sports tourism equipment and the establishment of sports tourism co-operation platforms.
