Sri Lanka - Hambantota International Port Group

" The Port of Hambantota is located in the capital of the Hambantota District of Southern Sri Lanka. It is about 10 nautical miles from the main international shipping route. It is one of the 16 strategic fulcrums of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road in the National "Belt and Road" plan. The Hankang project in the first and second phases consists of ten 20,000-150,000-ton production berths and its ancillary facilities, including containers, general-purpose and crude oil terminals, with a total land area and marine area of 11.88 square kilometres and a franchise authority of 99 years. The total investment of the project is USD1.4 billion. Out of this, China Merchants Port (CMPort) invested USD974 million to acquire 85% of the shares of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) from the Port Authority of Sri Lanka (SLPA). At present, Hankang has become an important international transit centre for ro-ro vehicles in South Asia. Other bulk cargos, crude oil products and container businesses will also be fully launched, and the Lingang Industrial Park will attract enterprises to come. The new overall development plan of Hankang is underway. In future, the Shekou development model of "Port-District-City" will be introduced, focusing on five major platforms: port services, maritime services, integrated logistics, port industry and business incubator to foster Hankang to become a central hub in the 'Belt and Road Initiative' and a role model for foreign collaboration along the 'Belt and Road Initiative'."
